A linear programming algorithm is used to estimate the parameters of a wheat storage decision model. This approach allows objective functions other than minimization of error squared to be used. It is demonstrated that by using a profit maximization objective function, an improved wheat storage decision model can be developed. |

An assessment of the reared stocks of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas ) has been recently conducted on the major French areas of molluscs culture. The methodology proposed included both estimates of densities obtained by subsampling in the field, and aerial photographs which covered the cultivated, intertidal area. The size and the number of samples were designed to reach a precision of 10% on the final assessment in each area. The field work consisted in weighing and counting the oyster in unit areas of 0.5 m2 for the bottom culture or in trays or bags, for the off bottom technique. These results give a better knowledge of the technique evolution and of the general structures in the cultivated areas. |

Florida is typical of many southeastern states in that it exports feeder cattle and imports carcass and boxed beef. The objective of this paper is to estimate the cost of retaining feeder cattle in Florida, feeding these cattle to slaughter weights, slaughtering them, and distributing the meat to retail outlets. A mixed integer programming model is developed. The optimal number and location of feedlots and slaughter plants are determined. The results indicate that at production levels exceeding 600,000 head, the cost of producing carcass beef in the State is comparable to the average for the United States. |

This monograph deals with the systematics and phylogeny of the genus Pyrrosia (Polypodiaceae). It is one of the results of the Polypodiaceae-project that is being carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hennipman (State University, Utrecht). With this treatment of Pyrrosia, the group of the Platycerioid ferns (sometimes regarded as a subfamily) will be completed. The total number of genera in this group is reduced to two: Platycerium and Pyrrosia. Other publications dealing with this group are Hennipman & Roos (1982), dealing with Platycerium; and Ravensberg & Hennipman (1986), dealing with the former genera Drymoglossum and Saxiglossum, now in Pyrrosia. Together with Hennipman & Ravensberg’s account this forms the first complete account... |

Monte Carlo analysis of the performance of alternative estimators of simultaneous system's coefficients in the presence of autocorrelation is performed. The "true" underlying model is an estimated, three-equation, monthly model of the U.S. pork market. Estimators for ex post forecasts are also compared. Multicollinearity is found to be a salient characteristic likely adversely affecting estimator performance. Results show that correcting for autocorrelation is desirable when levels of autocorrelation are high for both parameter accuracy and ex post forecasting. However, the best structural coefficient estimator for high levels of autocorrelation is not necessarily the best estimator for ex post forecasting. |

A multi-product cost function model was used to analyze energy demand in various agricultural subsectors. This approach has advantages over previously used approaches since it reduces aggregation bias, considers technological jointness, and provides various disaggregative measures related to energy input demand. When fitted to West Virginia county level data, labor and miscellaneous inputs in crop and livestock production were found to be substitutes for energy, while capital, machinery, and fertilizer were complementary to energy. Energy demand was inelastic and increases in machinery prices had the largest reduction effect on energy demand. Technological change was found to be capital, machinery, and fertilizer using, but it was labor and energy saving.... |

A new species of damselfish Chromis lubbocki (Teleostei: Pomacentridae) from the Cape Verde Archipelago is described. The following combination of characters separates C. lubbocki from other eastern Atlantic Chromis: Dorsal fin rays XIV, 12; pectoral fin rays 20 (occasionally 19 or 21); transverse scale rows 27 (rarely 26); scales below lateral-line 9, scales between terminal lateral-line scale and dorsal base 1 1/2; 22-24 gill-rakers on lower limb of first gill-arch; second anal spine longer than longest anal ray; length of second anal spine 18.0-22.2% SL; pelvic fins short, length of longest ray 23.0-29.6% SL; fins yellowish in life. A key to the five species of Chromis now known from the eastern Atlantic is provided and their nomenclature discussed.... |

A new genus and species of parasitic copepod, Megallecto thirioti, has been found in a horizontal plankton haul at 100 m depth in the eastern north Atlantic. Its host is very probably a pteropod mollusc belonging to the thecosome group. This copepod would appear to be related to Micrallecto uncinata Stock, 1971 and Nannallecto fusii Stock, 1973, but differs from both in its much larger size and in several important structural features. |

Elaphoidella nuragica n.sp., from groundwater of Sardinia, Italy, is described, and Elaphoidella cvetkae Petkovski, 1983, known only from Yugoslavia, is for the first time reported from Italy. The new species belongs to the simplex-group of Elaphoidella s.str., sensu Apostolov (1985), being close to E. longifurcata Chappuis & Kiefer, 1952, and E. mauro Chappuis, 1952, both from groundwater of France. E. cvetkae, belonging to the gracilits-group, is redescribed and briefly discussed; the species is new to Italy. |

Monanthus ciocalyptoides n. sp. is described from two localities in the West Indian region, viz. the Saba Bank (17°25’N 63°33’W) and the Colombian Caribbean (11°20’N 74°09’W). The genus was hitherto known from South African waters only, by the type-species M. plumosus Kirkpatrick (1903). The systematic status of the new species and the genus as sublithistid members of the order Halichondrida is discussed. |
